Commercial HVAC systems differ from residential HVAC in many different ways. When you’re dealing with a commercial unit, you have several systems to choose from and multiple variables to consider when picking out the best option for your building. Continue reading to learn about the basics to commercial HVAC shopping and the types that are available for you.
What to Consider with Commercial HVAC
There are plenty of factors that come into play when you’re talking about commercial HVAC. Because this is a unit that needs to heat and cool larger buildings with different layouts and many people, you have some extra considerations to account for in your decision-making process that residential HVAC owners don’t need to think about.
You will want to think about building design, air quality, and energy efficiency among many other factors. In addition, it’s not always a one-size-fits-all choice. For some buildings it is more effective to use one system for one area and another for others. For example, a one-room space may benefit better from a different system than a space that is made up of many smaller rooms.
Types of Commercial HVAC
There are many types of commercial HVAC systems out there. Here’s some helpful insight on which system may be right for you.
Single-Split System
This system comes just like it sounds, with one of each part to help heat and cool your building. This means it comes with one compressor, evaporator coil, furnace, and refrigerant. This type of system functions by heating and cooling individual rooms which means they are best suited for smaller buildings.
Multi-split System
A multi-split system is similar to a single-split system except each room is hooked up to the single unit that is located outside. This makes it easy to heat and cool multiple rooms at once, making it most efficient in large commercial spaces.
Variable Air Volume
Also known as VAV, these are well suited for spaces with multiple rooms and are excellent are creating a consistent environment using varying airflow. This would not be recommended for buildings made up of large, single spaces but rather multi-space buildings because each area can be heated and cooled separately.
Variable Refrigerant Flow
VRV uses refrigerant to heat and cool a space and moves the refrigerant to whichever area of the building that is needed to be heated or cooled. This makes them great for several types of commercial spaces.
Constant Air Volume
A CAV works well in large open areas and aren’t so great for commercial buildings that require multiple heating or cooling zones. These provide constant airflow and are optimal for spaces with fewer windows.
